ISSUE # 142

The mid-term elections are behind us, so, IÕm afraid, is most of ObamaÕs agenda. As I have been saying since before the 2008 election, this presidency was begun on a void of course moon and most of the work will come to naught. I pray the health plan isnÕt a victim. The results of this election should have been obvious early on. We are not a nation that can handle radical change easily. Cancers rarely alter their way of life voluntarily and there is much underlying fear in the unknown for this water sign. The need to hold onto the past can cripple the progress of any of the water signs, especially this one.

This country is in a power struggle that is not totally alien to us. We have seen this tug-of-war throughout our history. When Saturn and Uranus are in conflict, as they have been this past 2 years, the status quo is shaky at best. There is often severe infighting and several reversals in the power structure. But what it shows is the underlying instability that has always existed in American politics.

The struggle that is ensuing in this country goes back hundreds of years. The seeds of the dispute between a strong federal government and statesÕ rights were an issue at the first constitutional congress. It was one of the main underlying causes of the Civil War and has continued to be a bone of contention throughout our history. It is a question that will ultimately decide the fate of our young republic.

Are we really one country? Can two diametrically opposed viewpoints live side by side in a society of mutual economic and military security? Or is a splintered, unstable collection of mini-Americas the inevitable end of our great experiment? Will there be one America where you can get a safe abortion and another where you canÕt? Is marijuana going to make California the wealthiest state in the union while Tennessee puts a thousand growers into jail for 10 years? (DonÕt worry, even though proposition 19 lost itÕs just a matter of time.)

And what about the distribution of wealth in our incredibly rich nation? Is the liberal agenda dead; are we going back to the trickle down theory of economics (donÕt even get me started)? These are important issues, of course. We are being torn into two camps, neither of which seems to satisfy the centralist views of the collective. This is what you expect when Saturn, ruler of all stability and structure, opposes Uranus, ruler of uninhibited ideas and sudden unexpected changes. Either we will create a new, realistic (sorry Tea Partiers) third party, which will find the compromises that neither the Democrats or Republicans seem to be able to, or we will see our nation jockeying back and forth from left to right for a decade or more until we have worn out our strength and given up our position in the world order. If that happens, the balance of the entire world will be thrown into turmoil and the coming Pluto – Uranus square will be most devastating. Without AmericaÕs firm hand the global situation will become even more lopsided and tenuous. So you see, there is more at stake now than even the future of our republic. As we increasingly become one world we ultimately influence each other more and more. We represent the only working democracy with the power to have any influence over the events of the coming century. If we miss this opportunity because of the inner squabbling of a dysfunctional government, we get what we deserve; a fractured, second rate economy of consumers without credit. And if we invest in a government that has no regard for environmental issues and only for the stock holders, we will ultimately lose.

The theoretical philosophy of this country is that we can create an environment where you can be anything you wish to be (with obvious exceptions that could disrupt the equilibrium of the species, such as being a mass murderer, or a Republican senator from New York). To that end the founding fathers were adamant about religious freedom. And yet we are still, after all these years, in a protracted debate about the place religion serves in our government, even though it is explicitly clear in the constitution that it has absolutely no place in decision making. Yet ÒIn God We TrustÓ is written in large letters across the back of all our currency. Hypocritical? Psychotic? Maybe bi-polar. The American collective has always been a troublesome thing. We have a Cancer Sun, which tends to be conservative, and an Aquarian Moon, which doesnÕt even recognize the word. This duality has always been difficult to understand, but it is very much what makes us the progressive country we can be, without slipping too far from the center. We also have a 10th house Saturn in square to our 8th house Sun, and basically always return to the midpoint of balance. The reason the Civil War ended the way it did wasnÕt because the British didnÕt enter when they could have on the side of the South, nor that the North had more industrial might. It was because the psychological make-up of the collective is more powerful than any single event or decision. It represents the ultimate choices that will be made at the pivotal points in history. And our collective had deemed long before the beginning of that conflict what its end would be. The natal chart of the country was more powerful than the desire to break it apart.

But countries, just like individuals, change through time; become more fragile or lazy. It happened to every empire from Babylonia to England. And it seems to be happening to us. We are still quite young in the scheme of things. We have only existed for a little under 2 ½ centuries, and our ÒempireÓ only really began after the Second World War. We are facing a different kind of enemy than has ever besieged a ruling nation. Globalization. Its very name implies the end of our leadership. This may be a good thing in the long run. It has an historic legacy that leads back to the Romans – centralize everything and you will have peace. The problem is, of course, that while we are expanding and investing in emerging markets and playing Monopoly with the Chinese, fully half the world is on the verge of starvation; Haiti is a hell hole about to become much worse. Clean drinking water worldwide is rapidly being depleted in exchange for short term profits, etc. Most of us believe that we must change direction, and soon, or it wonÕt matter if you call yourself a liberal or conservative. ItÕs a question of what that new direction is supposed to be that we donÕt agree upon. Pluto will oppose our Jupiter, ruler of the chart, and Uranus will square it for the next several years. By the time those aspects are over we will know.

On November 18th Venus and Jupiter both come out of retrograde. Many projects and issues that have been stalled may begin to move forward with this double change in direction. These are called the lesser and greater benefic planets, and financial situations may change for the better. Since the last Saturn – Uranus opposition the markets have held. I said months ago that if they did, that would represent a temporary bottom. Now with these two planets changing direction we may see another big jump in the stocks. But this does not mean that I think we are out of the woods yet. There will be many dips in these markets over the next several years. With Pluto and Uranus about to begin their two year square we may still see some sudden and violent reversals in the equities.

The New Moon falls on Saturday November 6th at 12:52 A.M. EST at 13 degrees Scorpio 40 minutes. This is perhaps the most misunderstood of the signs. It is responsible for rejuvenation and rebirth. The corresponding 8th house is where we recharge our batteries and through which we reincarnate (if you believe) or reinvent ourselves periodically throughout our lives. Look for ways to begin anew any project or plans you have been pursuing. This is the time of year when we start the process of depletion and the earth goes into sleep mode in preparation for the inevitable spring.

The first aspect to complete after this New Moon is Mercury square Neptune. For those who observe and follow New Moon charts (an interesting endeavor), that square will set the pace from now until the Full Moon, and confusion may very well be the order of business for the next few weeks.

Also on Saturday November 6th at 2:46 A.M. EST this confusing and at times debilitating transit completes. Caution is called for in communication and travel. Mistakes and misunderstandings are common, and it may be very hard to get your point across. Make sure you understand others and that you are understood. The misdirection that this square produces can be very debilitating. Because this falls in the shadow of the New Moon you must allow for this confusion to continue until the Full Moon on November 21st.

On Sunday November 7th at 1:05 A.M. EST this planet comes out of retrograde. It has been a difficult time for many in Neptunian fields, such as medicine and the arts. Anything that has been internalized will come out into the public now. If you have a project that has been stifled, it may see the light of day. Caution is necessary for the few days surrounding this turnaround. Confusion may be rampant, and clarity hard to come by. But once it gets moving things will clear up quickly.

Also on Sunday November 7th at 10:07 P.M. EST Venus retrogrades back into one of the signs it rules. Relationships will be the center of attention for many of us for the rest of this month as we internalize our feelings regarding a potential mate. The assimilation process will take place in the unconscious, and the results will be revealed when Venus changes direction. Any problems that exist in a connection will come to light when Venus goes direct on November 18th.

On Monday November 8th at 6:43 P.M. EST the planet of communication enters expansive Sagittarius. People will tend to be more optimistic and open than recently when Mercury was traveling through Scorpio. Sag can easily blow things out of proportion, so it is important to keep your perspective. DonÕt exaggerate or make promises you may not be able to keep. Plans can grow too quickly or too big to handle.

On Monday November 15th at 12:59 A.M. EST this very useful energy completes. This is a day to get things done. The ego is under control and there is a desire to achieve something, even if it is just getting the grunt work out of the way. DonÕt rush things or expect an outlandish outcome. Slow meticulous actions will have the best results. Because the Sun trines Jupiter later today (see below) the energy will change once this completes and we head towards that more expansive aspect.

Also on Monday November 15th at 6:45 P.M. EST this unrestrained energy will take over where the Mars sextile Saturn left off. If you used the earlier part of the day properly, you should have gotten most of your work out of the way. If so, this more sociable transit will now have a chance to act. Ideas and plans will be growth oriented, and you can now take that next step on your path. This is a good evening to spend with friends or in any sort of educational situation.

On Thursday November 18th at 4:55 A.M. EST this difficult aspect comes along. Confusion and a lack of self-confidence are two common reactions to this transit. If it sets off your chart you will probably experience it this way. This is usually a very bad day for the financial markets; however with Jupiter and Venus about to go direct this may also be a temporary bottom. You must use caution if trading this week. There could be some sudden and violent shifts.

Also on Thursday November 18th at 11:55 A.M. EST the planet of growth and expansion changes direction. Plans that have been delayed or seemed abandoned may be restarted. The individualÕs and the collectiveÕs desire to enlarge things will become the dominant force. Any issues in your life that have been stifled including a career, relationship or projects will either move forward now or be dropped altogether to make room for new ideas. This often represents a bottom in the stocks, but much depends upon how they have been trading leading up to this moment. If there has been a correction, then this will be the bottom. If the stocks have been riding high, then the Sun – Neptune square mentioned above will spank them.

On Thursday November 18th at 4:19 P.M. EST Venus also begins to travel forward. This is an important moment in the world, as the two benefic planets come out of retrograde together. We will see some growth in the financial markets for a while, although there needs to be a more solid foundation for any real expansion to take place, and we do not have that at the moment. Love relationships will also begin to move. Those that are strong will advance, and those that have serious limitations will be tested to see if they are still valid.

On Friday November 19th at 12:58 A.M. EST our attention will be directed towards the more unusual things in life. It will be easier to take a different route today. Look for the atypical. This is a good aspect for experimentation of all sorts. DonÕt just follow your usual routine, but step outside the box a moment. You may be pleasantly surprised at what you discover.

On Saturday November 20th at 1:53 P.M. EST many of us will be looking for an argument. If you donÕt pay attention you could easily walk into something that has little to do with you or could easily be sidestepped. There will be a lot of force behind peopleÕs communication. If used properly this can be a productive day. The excessive energy this produces can be directed into projects and you could get a lot of paperwork done.

This monthÕs lunar peak occurs on Sunday November 21st at 12:27 P.M. EST at 29 degrees Taurus 18 minutes. Taurus rules possessions and values, and we certainly are in a state of redefining just what that means in our society. This will tell us much about the present state of our collective finances and what we can expect in the coming months. Arguments regarding money and possessions are to be expected. As with all Full Moons, a certain amount of respect is called for, so use caution, especially in fiscal matters. This could very well be a turning point in the markets, so watch your investments closely.

On Monday November 22nd at 5:15 A.M. EST we enter the mutable part of autumn. Now the change towards winter will be more apparent as we mold into the next season. This is the most optimistic and expansive of signs, and it rules long journeys. Thanksgiving is the busiest travel time of the year. And the period leading up to Christmas is usually the most sociable and outgoing. I often mention how funny it is that while Christmas falls in Capricorn, the shopping season is primarily in Sagittarius. Our ancestors were no fools.

On Thursday November 25th at 9:19 A.M. EST it will be necessary to use a little caution. While this can be an optimistic and pleasant square, it will tend to blow most communications out of proportion. DonÕt make promises you can not keep. And try to put some boundaries around your plans. If they are too big you wonÕt be able to achieve them.

On Saturday November 27th at 9:28 P.M. EST this potentially explosive transit completes. People will be nervous and irritable, especially if this square sets off an individualÕs chart. Arguments and outbursts are common. Accidents are also quite possible, especially while traveling. Take precautions and drive defensively. Ideas may be inspirational, and will come quickly, but they may be too scattered to be effectively used. Jot down any thoughts you have and review them once this has passed.

On Monday November 29th at 9:51 A.M. EST egos will be way out of control. There will be an exceptional amount of energy being projected out, and you should try to keep things in perspective. It is easy to overdo when these two planets are in conflict. If this sets off your chart you could act in an ego-centric or pushy manner, which could cause others to push back.

Also on Monday November 29th at 7:35 P.M. EST Venus enters the opposite sign of its rulership. The planet of love doesnÕt do all that well in this Mars related water sign. Things are often hidden and a sort of tit-for-tat attitude can prevail. Feelings are deep and raw, and any disagreements could be blown out of proportion. Romance may be lacking the gentler side, and people could be very direct or even arrogant in relationships. Try to compromise or find common ground.

On Tuesday November 30th at 7:11 P.M. EST the planet of communication enters this stoic sign. Conversations will be more conservative and focused than they have been this past month with Mercury traveling through Sagittarius. Now people will want to know your facts and not take things on faith alone. ItÕs a good month to focus your attention where it is most needed. Capricorn has little patience for frivolity and will demand clear and concise answers.

On Friday December 3rd at 9:01 A.M. EST this potentially explosive transit completes. Caution is certainly called for, and you must pay attention to what you and others are doing. This can cause disagreements, confrontations and even accidents, so watch what you are getting into. There will be a lot of excessive energy floating around and it is important to direct it somewhere. If this square sets off your chart you could overreact to the slightest thing, so try to stay aware of how you are feeling. Exercise or any physical labor can help, but you must be cautious not to overdo things or you could injure yourself.

The next New Moon falls on Sunday December 5th at 12:36 P.M. EST at 13 degrees Sagittarius 28 minutes. The day or two leading up to it will be a particularly low energy period. If you tend to be emotional this may be a very trying time each month. I have found that people with prominent moons or a Cancer Sun, Moon or ascendant respond to the cycles of the moon more intensely than others. Spend this time finishing up anything that is incomplete, donÕt try to initiate new projects on a waning moon, it just wonÕt work out. Once the New Moon hits you begin new projects or attempt a new approach to an existing problem. If you have been living in a situation or involved in a relationship that is intolerable or has outlived its usefulness this would be the proper time to move on with your life. If you have been working on a project that is almost complete but you seem to lack the energy for the finality, you must push during these low energy days to end the matter once and for all. If you donÕt, when the New Moon arrives it will bring this ÒdeadÓ energy along with it and conflict with the newer force being presented. Each month we are offered a chance to clean house, so to speak.

Note: All aspects are most powerful and effective as they apply. Once the transit has completed, its force is lessened. The further it separates the weaker it becomes.

Below is a list of times this month when the Moon is Void of Course and neither important decisions nor purchases should be made during these periods. The Void of Course Moon is a time when we should try to center ourselves and deal with spiritual matters not materialistic ones. Any decisions made on the VC Moon will not turn out the way we had expected.

The Moon is Void of Course from the time it makes its last major aspect in a sign until it enters the next sign. For example, if the Moon squares Mars at 27 degrees Aries and then has no more aspects until it enters Taurus it will be Void of Course for three degrees or about 6 hours. The aspects used are the conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition.
