LIVING BY STARLIGHT
AN ASTROLOGICAL NEWSLETTER
The midterm elections are on everyoneÕs mind. Is this the end of the Obama administration? Well, I have told you for the past two years that Mr. Obama was inaugurated under a Void of Course Moon, no matter how many times he took the oath or how he tried to screw with fate. He became president at noon that day, as per the constitution. Anything begun under a void moon will lack direction and tend to veer off course. It is not attached to any other energy and has less chance of success. As fate would have it, the Democrats took power as the world was spinning out of control so they were destined to take much blame that truly doesnÕt belong in their lap. This is a typical result of projects begun under a V.C. Moon.
There have been a total of five presidents that were inaugurated on Void of Course Moons:
F.D.R. Jan 20 1945. He died within 100 days of the beginning of his last term.
J.F.K. Jan 20 1961. He died before finishing his term.
Nixon Jan 20 1973. He resigned in disgrace never completing his 2nd term.
Clinton Jan 20 1997. His 2nd term in office was a catastrophe resulting in the only impeachment of a president in our nationÕs history.
Obama Jan 20 2009.
All indicators point to the Republicans making some gains, although not the landslide some are predicting. But even moderate gains will destroy the DemocratÕs agenda and freeze this government for the next 2 years. This is not good for the stock markets, or for our middle class.
For those of you who believe that the stimulus packages and debt are the undoing of our country, letÕs look at history. From the time F.D.R. took office in the Great Depression this country virtually survived on what we call stimulus packages. Huge public works, such as the T.V.A. kept thousands of Americans employed for years. Still, the Republicans in congress fought him tooth and nail for every program. In 1937 Roosevelt apparently made some concessions to appease the other side and attempt to prematurely balance the budget. He stopped new stimuli, and the result was what became known as the Roosevelt Recession of Õ37-Õ38. Many economists and historians believe that at that point we would have slipped back into full depression from a long time, but for an unlikely turn of events. On September 1 1939 Hitler invaded Poland and the world changed forever. Our huge industrial might was revved up and geared towards a wartime economy. And everybody had a job. And who were they working for? The federal government. You were either in the armed forces or you worked in a factory. But you worked. Not that I am recommending a world war to pull us out of this, but to show you that we have learned nothing. At the end of the war our deficit was 120% of our G.D.P. But by the 50Õs it was 23%. We need more stimuli, not less. We need to strengthen the middle class, not cripple it. All the Republicans have to do is win enough seats in each house to stall our government and they will have won. ItÕs the American people who will lose. They will block all new spending programs, further unemployment extensions, etc. Personally, I think capitalism as it is currently practiced sucks and will ultimately be the demise of our species. But if you want to continue the game the way it has been played you must protect the individual. But that has become a daunting goal.
As I have said repeatedly, the present Supreme Court is perhaps the most dangerous institution in the world. Its majority represents the corporate world against the rights of the individual without shame or pretense. The recent ruling that essentially allows unlimited money to be spent secretly destroying any candidate that gets in the way of someoneÕs agenda will have long term results. The buying of power is an old game; as old as humanity. But we are supposed to be a civilization that can rise above our nature and pursue higher goals. If this ruling stands it wonÕt matter much what happens in this mid-term election. This will only be the test run. It is 2012 that will decide the balance of power in our country. How much this Supreme Court decision influences the outcome will decide if we are, in fact, destined to live under the power of the May 2000 Great Alignment in Taurus for the foreseeable future. (I have formulated an opinion regarding the results of the 2012 election, which I will share at my next lecture.)
It will take an act of congress to change the Supreme Court ruling. But wait, most corporations are overwhelmingly Republican, so now they will be able to buy enough seats for the G.O.P. to prevent that. Well, perhaps a future Supreme Court will change the ruling. Oh wait, if the Republicans regain the White House it could be generations before the split in the court reverses. And with Ginsberg aging and in questionable health even the 5-4 split could be at risk. Hmm, sure seems to me like a stacked deck. ThereÕs an old saying: If you are in a poker game and canÕt recognize the sucker, itÕs you.
Since this mess began in 2008 my studies have shown that we are facing at least a decade of sideward growth at best. Look at a chart of the DOW. From 1967 (the last time Saturn opposed Uranus) until 1982 the market had wild ups and downs, even making new highs several times, but it was a 16 year bear market. In 1982 your stocks were worth what they were worth in 1967. Of course, in the 70Õs and 80Õs we had huge inflation that eventually forced a non-effective price-wage freeze. But at least we got 12% interest on checking accounts! Each recession has its own personality, and this one is very much a result of the Great Alignment in Taurus. We are seeing a redistribution of wealth, as happens when Saturn opposes Uranus. In 1965-7 following the February 1962 Great Alignment in Aquarius this resulted in JohnsonÕs War on Poverty and the entitlement programs. However, this time it is tipping in favor of the rich.
Unemployment continues to rise and yet the DOW is approaching 11,000. Why? Well, I believe that America has a ŌMine and YoursĶ mentality. Give me mine, and up yours. The stocks are not an indicator of the standard of living they represented in the past. They only represent the profits that can be squeezed out of the global economy. Corporations have become self-contained multi-national units. They are no longer integrated into any community, as DetroitÕs demise will confirm. All that matters is the price of the stock and any dividend it can return. According to the New York Times, in order to show profitability the major corporations unnecessarily fired hundreds of thousands of employees during this great recession. As a result, over the past 2 years the bottom line of many companies has risen along with the unemployment rate. The stocks barely acknowledge an increase in the number. We have accepted a higher percentage of unemployed as the norm, and it will be years before that number shrinks back to pre-recession levels.
As the American middle class contracts and the Chinese and Indian middle class expand, we will become less important on the world stage. At the moment our role in this Brave New World of globalization is to consume all the crap the rest of the world makes. If we canÕt afford to buy it they will sell it to each other. At some point the Chinese may decide it isnÕt worth supporting our debt and they may stop buying our bonds, something I have been warning about in this newsletter for years. China is a Libra country, established October 1 1949. Libra is a powerful and misunderstood sign; a passive-aggressive energy that often gets its way in relationships. All our efforts to force them to float their currency have failed. China has the Libra ability to wait things out, and when the opposition is exhausted, pick up the spoils and start anew.
The New Moon falls on Thursday October 7th at 2:44 P.M. EST at 14 degrees Libra 24 minutes. This sign lives for relationships, and for the next month that will be what most of us focus on. It is the interaction between us that matters now, not how many widgets you sell. Libra likes balance more than anything, and if something is out of whack it will become obvious. That is why we have the most stock market crashes in October – the unbalance becomes intolerable and the collective acts. With Venus about to retrograde, relationship issues will become even more prominent. This will be a period of reflection and testing of the most intimate connections.
On Friday October 8th at 3:06 A.M. EST the planet of love and money begins to move backwards. This is a time to examine your relationships and see if they are working out for you. It may be difficult for some to express their feelings while this planet is running backwards, but that will be true only if you arenÕt sure about your emotions. A strong relationship may experience this as a very intimate time when more walls are broken down between you allowing a closer connection. But a shaky one will show its weakness. Money issues may be more pronounced until Venus goes direct November 18th.
MERCURY CONJUNCTS SATURN:
Also on Friday October 8th at 7:35 A.M. EST this wet-blanket completes. People may be a bit dour this morning. I wouldnÕt plan a meeting or breakfast where you must make an important presentation. (And morning nookie is out of the question.) The energy simply wonÕt be there. Conversations will take on a more serious tone and itÕs a good day to have any reality based conversation. Frivolousness will not be well received, so try to stick to the significant issues.
THE SUN CONJUNCT MERCURY:
On Saturday October 16th at 9:05 P.M. EST this common conjunct occurs. It is a day of active communications and chattiness. This is a good evening for a dinner or other social gathering. Conversations will be lively and a good, open discussion may reveal some important facts. If this afflicts Mercury or Uranus in your chart this may be a day of excessive nervousness. A little caution is always a good idea when these two are conjunct.
MERCURY TRINES NEPTUNE:
On Monday October 18th at 8:04 A.M. EST this creative transit will open our consciousness to new ideas and a greater appreciation of the arts. Any creative project will get a boost of energy and a momentary bit of inspiration is certainly possible. This and the Sun trine Neptune mentioned below are both charitable and warm-hearted. Anything you do to help your neighbor will be rewarding to you both.
THE SUN TRINES NEPTUNE:
On Tuesday October 19th at 8:20 A.M. EST this completes, adding to the energy of the Mercury trine mentioned above. This is a few days to listen to your instincts more than your intellect. We will be in tune with the ethereal side of things, which will be more of a blessing to the artists out there than the businesspeople. Still, give yourself over to the mystical once in a while, so the child within doesnÕt atrophy.
MERCURY ENTERS SCORPIO:
On Wednesday October 20th at 5:19 P.M. EST communications will take on a more intense flavor. After a month of Mercury traveling through pleasant Libra it may be a bit of a jolt getting used to the depth and force behind most peopleÕs speech. It often isnÕt as important what you say as how you say it, so use a little caution until you understand the change. Now we will be prone to delve more deeply into issues that might have been overlooked.
MARS TRINES JUPITER:
Also on Wednesday October 20th at 9:42 P.M. EST an added shot of energy will produced. This is a trine so it will be necessary to use this energy proactively. It will not force itself upon us as a conjunct or square might. However, it will be much easier to direct where you want it once you choose to act.
MARS SQUARES NEPTUNE:
On Friday October 22nd at 11:37 A.M. EST this potentially difficult aspect completes. Mars does not do well under NeptuneÕs energy. It ego force tends to be diluted and there just isnÕt enough power to get things done. This is not a good time to make an important presentation or to confront someone directly. Neither of you will have enough energy to make your point and you could feel badly about the results. Neptune also doesnÕt do too well under MarsÕ fire. You must use caution if consuming alcohol, or any drugs (legal or illegal is not a concern when interpreting these issues). The combination could result in over consumption, a negative reaction in the body, or a barroom brawl. Maybe all three if youÕre lucky.
Also on Friday October 22nd at 9:37 P.M. EST this monthÕs lunar peak occurs at 29 degrees Aries 33 minutes. This is the 2nd Aries Full Moon in a month, and it falls in the last half degree of the sign. The next few weeks will be the completion of something begun last month. Because the mid-term elections fall near the end of the lunar cycle they will represent the completion of some issues. Use caution for a few days surrounding this aspect. Aries is ruled by Mars, the god of war, and there will be a lot of tension in the air. There is no reason why you shouldnÕt avoid it.
THE SUN ENTERS SCORPIO:
On Saturday October 23rd at 8:35 A.M. EST we enter the fixed part of autumn. This is the most fall-like of months, before winter cut through. The leaves are changing and we are settling in for the long haul. Once we enter mutable Sagittarius it begins to fluctuate and feel more like winter. For the next month or so people will tend to be a bit more intense and less likely to accept superficial responses. Scorpio and the 8th house it rules are all about rejuvenation. This sign gets a bad rap in astrology, yet it is the place in our charts where we can reinvent ourselves and throw off the old weeds allowing for new growth.
MARS TRINES URANUS:
On Sunday October 24th at 10:57 A.M. EST this useful energy will occur. If you focus on this trine you can project the energy of Mars into innovative and inspired projects. This is an assertive transit, but not an aggressive one, like the conjunct, opposition or square. You can be forceful without being pushy, so try to make the most of this. At the very least it will allow for a lively Sunday brunch.
MERCURY CONJUNCTS VENUS:
On Monday October 25th at 9:17 A.M. EST everyone will want to get along for a few hours, so take advantage of it. Have a business breakfast or make that important phone call this morning. A long walk will be very enjoyable and may stir up your creative juices.
MARS ENTERS SAGITTARIUS:
On Thursday October 28th at 2:48 A.M. EST the planet of ego enters the most expansive of signs. Obviously we must all use a little caution until December 7th as Mars transits Sagittarius. There will be a tendency to blow things out of proportion and for some of us to assert our egos in inappropriate ways. Most difficulties that will occur as a result of this aspect could easily be avoided by taking a step backwards and giving way to someone else.
THE SUN CONJUNCTS VENUS:
Also on Thursday October 28th at 9:10 P.M. EST this very pleasant and easy-going energy completes. The arts, nature and anything of beauty will be greatly appreciated. Try to take in some creative project. Relationships will shine and even superficial ones will be more rewarding. Just watch how much you eat and drink. Venus loves to indulge in rich foods, sweets and alcohol (yum).
MERCURY TRINES JUPITER:
On Thursday November 4th at 5:46 P.M. EST this very pleasant transit will complete. DonÕt start a conversation today unless you have a lot of time. People will want to talk, and talk and talk. Moods should be pretty good and most of us will be very sociable, unless there is a nasty Saturn aspect going on in your chart. This transit favors all travel and communications, particularly if it sets off your chart.
DARK OF THE MOON:
The next New Moon falls on Saturday November 6th at 12:52 A.M. EST at 13 degrees Scorpio 40 minutes. The day or two leading up to it will be a particularly low energy period. If you tend to be emotional this may be a very trying time each month. I have found that people with prominent moons or a Cancer Sun, Moon or ascendant respond to the cycles of the moon more intensely than others. Spend this time finishing up anything that is incomplete, donÕt try to initiate new projects on a waning moon, it just wonÕt work out. Once the New Moon hits you begin new projects or attempt a new approach to an existing problem. If you have been living in a situation or involved in a relationship that is intolerable or has outlived its usefulness this would be the proper time to move on with your life. If you have been working on a project that is almost complete but you seem to lack the energy for the finality, you must push during these low energy days to end the matter once and for all. If you donÕt, when the New Moon arrives it will bring this ŌdeadĶ energy along with it and conflict with the newer force being presented. Each month we are offered a chance to clean house, so to speak.
Note: All aspects are most powerful and effective as they apply. Once the transit has completed, its force is lessened. The further it separates the weaker it becomes.
Below is a list of times this month when the Moon is Void of Course and neither important decisions nor purchases should be made during these periods. The Void of Course Moon is a time when we should try to center ourselves and deal with spiritual matters not materialistic ones. Any decisions made on the VC Moon will not turn out the way we had expected.
The Moon is Void of Course from the time it makes its last major aspect in a sign until it enters the next sign. For example, if the Moon squares Mars at 27 degrees Aries and then has no more aspects until it enters Taurus it will be Void of Course for three degrees or about 6 hours. The aspects used are the conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition.
All times are Eastern Daylight:
