LIVING BY STARLIGHT

AN ASTROLOGICAL NEWSLETTER

BY MITCHELL SCOTT LEWIS

JANUARY 2009

AUTHORÕS NOTES:

The Sun, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Pluto will all be in the earth sign of Capricorn until January 1st when Mercury enters Aquarius. The end of this year will be a time of consolidation and evaluation. We are all feeling the limitations of this recession, and during the next few weeks, as so many planets transit this conservative sign we will see even more restrictions and reticence.  Many of the emergency programs that were put into place over the past several months, including TARP and the auto bailout are seriously flawed and will have limited success in their current state. TARP was agreed upon and put into place under retrograde Mercury, and its inherent problems have become obvious. We have handed Mr. Paulson, a Wall Street banker by profession, an unsupervised and unprecedented amount of money to give to other Wall Street bankers to secure their own future, not yours and mine. The purpose of this money was to free up credit and have the banks release it into the general population so we would buy more crap. But what has happened is that the banks have lowered peopleÕs credit limits and refuse to lend money to those with less than stellar credit ratings. If I were a conspiracy theorist I wouldnÕt have a hard time believing there was some underlying agreement among the worldÕs financial leaders to control humanity through their checking accounts and credit cards. I have a hard time believing people are capable of working so well in consort, but there is little doubt in my mind that these same people are taking advantage of this crisis situation to tighten their control and limit the choices the individual has.

Our constitution has proven itself to be a living and changeable doctrine by which our government can continue to evolve. Almost as soon as it was completed the addition of the Bill of Rights showed how flexible and amazing it is. The world has changed, and our plight as humans isnÕt what it was in the 18th century. We are no longer living under the thumb of a despot king, but under the weight of Visa and MasterCard. Our founding fathers certainly understood financial difficulties. Many of them went bankrupt, several more than once. But they could not have foreseen what the results of 232 years of commercial growth would produce. The society we have built is far more multifaceted, and the world of Adam Smith has become a juggernaut of complexities and diversions. The common person can barely understand the bills sent to them, yet they are expected to handle complicated financial transactions and compete in a computerized world where wealth has become the only standard by which we judge success. We have put all of the power of our society into the hands of men we will never see. Globalization has created an international ruling class in all nations capable of making decisions that affect our very financial and political security. It costs so much money to elect anyone to office that only the rich and powerful will ever have the chance. Obama blew the lid off campaign spending. And heÕs a Democrat! The future of democracy lies in its funding. Nothing will change that fact for generations to come.

But what we need is a financial bill of right that will protect the individual and keep at least some rein on the power of wealth. It should be simple and spelled out clearly, as opposed to the ÒdisclosuresÓ banks and credit card companies send us in the mail. And it must be done soon. A few more years of a recession/depression and there wonÕt be anything left to fight over. We are playing a game of Monopoly and all the properties have been sold. If you donÕt have a monopoly by now, all you can do is move around the board and hope to hit free parking every once in a while so you can keep paying rent until the inevitable bankruptcy.

Those of you who follow my newsletter know that I have been discussing the five passes of Saturn opposite Uranus. The first pass occurred on Election Day. Saturn will oppose Uranus for the second time on February 5th. The time leading up to this opposition will be one of great stress. The first stock market crash in 2008 occurred as this aspect was applying. It completed at 18 degrees Virgo – Pisces exactly on Mars in the New York Stock ExchangeÕs chart. We couldnÕt ask for a more perfect example of financial astrology at work. We can expect some disruptive news and resulting market reactions towards the end of January when the Saturn – Uranus opposition completes at 20 degrees, in square to AmericaÕs Mars. These markets will not settle down until the last pass of this opposition in July 2010. Until then, expect volatility to continue, and for the bottom to fall out several more times. Our culture is broken. The financial strangle hold that the banks, credit card companies and corporation have over us is squeezing the life out of the middle class, like a cobra playing with its food before consumption. If we donÕt take this opportunity to make adjustment, we are heading into nothing less than an inescapable collapse of the capitalistic system. Globalization would be replaced by protectionism. The world would then be divided into spheres of influence. And since we have stripped our country of most of its manufacturing jobs while the Chinese and Indians have built powerhouses of industrial strength who do you think the 21st century will belong to?

Jupiter enters Aquarius on January 5th. We can expect some sudden changes in the financial markets. There may be a powerful bear market rally, but thatÕs all it would be. The bottom of this market is going to take a long time to firm up. Jupiter is applying to a conjunct to Neptune this May in this erratic sign. We may see inflation rearing its ugly head once again. There will be great optimism, but also grand illusions. We must walk the path carefully this year or the result will be another blow up of the commodities including oil, resulting in a crushing weight on the already besieged population.

Please watch my brief youtube discussions on the Great Alignment and Saturn opposite Uranus.

NEW MOON:

The New Moon falls on Saturday December 27th at 7:22 A.M. EST at 6 degrees Capricorn 08 minutes. This earth sign is interested in stability and laying a strong foundation. This month we will all be more concerned about our resources and the value of things. Because of the current economic atmosphere this month could weigh heavily upon many of us as we are forced to recognize the reality we face. This is not a time for frivolous activities. The spirit is looking for purpose behind our actions. This is a time of consolidation and building up a reserve.

MARS CONJUNCTS PLUTO:

On Sunday December 28th at 2:59 P.M. EST this potentially difficult aspect arrives. People may be a bit feisty and looking for disagreements. Try to avoid direct confrontations and find releases for any stress you may be holding in. Otherwise it could seep out in the most destructive of manners. Power struggles and unwarranted aggression are possible manifestations of this transit, especially if it hits a sensitive area of your chart.

MERCURY CONJUNCTS JUPITER:

On Wednesday December 31st at 6:41 A.M. EST a boost of optimism and enthusiasm will accompany this aspect. People will be chatty and outgoing. This is a wonderful energy that can rejuvenate your fantasies and bring a much needed jolt of energy. But do be careful not to make promises you canÕt keep. Jupiter tends to overdo whatever it is involved in, so not everything you say or hear will be accessible. Enjoy this transit, but take things with a grain of salt. The need to talk is quite prominent, and it may lead to revealing some secrets.

SATURN RETROGRADES:

Also on Wednesday December 31st at 1:09 P.M. EST the planet of karma and responsibility begins its backward journey. It will be more difficult to begin a new business or expand an existing one while this is in retrograde. This is a time to review your life and solidify your foundation. If you must start something new, make sure the underlying structure is secure or you will have problems later on.

MERCURY ENTERS AQUARIUS:

On Thursday January 1st at 4:52 A.M. EST the planet of thought and speech enters this most erratic of signs. For the next few weeks people will be more impulsive in their communications. Expect the unexpected and try not to be surprised by what others tell you. Unusual ideas will be presented. Take a moment to review them before deciding if there is validity or not. Sometimes something that had not occurred to you is exactly what you need. But if you are too close-minded you will not recognize its value. Accidents are more likely with Mercury in this sign, so use extra caution while traveling. The erratic nature of this energy can lead to misdirection, which could lead to mistakes and accidents.

VENUS ENTERS PISCES:

On Saturday January 3rd at 7:36 A.M. EST the planet of love and possessions enters this mutable water sign. Love may be confusing as a desire to help others supersedes your romantic interests. A relationship born with this placement will be compassionate and empathetic, but it may not be as exciting. Keep an eye on your money as well. There can be confusion regarding your finances as well.

JUPITER ENTERS AQUARIUS:

On Monday January 5th at 10:42 A.M. EST the world will begin to change. Jupiter in Capricorn was a very difficult placement. It helped lead to the stock market crash and the decay of your financial markets. Growth was very hard and limitations of all sorts were felt. Now as Jupiter enters this unusual sign things will begin to move. This does not mean that the stock market is a buy and all our worries are over. Saturn is still in opposition to Uranus, and the truth is that at times throughout history the markets took a bigger beating once Jupiter left Capricorn and entered Aquarius, so caution is still recommended. But the ideas and hopes and dreams that have been suppressed this past year will begin to assert themselves once again. Creativity will begin to stir and new ideas and concepts will be presented. Some of these ideas will be wonderful and offer new and unusual ways to improve the situation. It may take some time, but we will have the opportunities to rebuild our foundation.

FULL MOON:

This monthÕs lunar peak occurs on Saturday January 10th at 10:27 P.M. EST at 21 degrees 02 minutes Cancer. Cancer rules the home, and this Full Moon will be concerned with issues of family and friends, as well as the actual home itself. Emotions will run high today, so try not to set someone off. Many of us will be nostalgic and this is a good time to reach out to old friends or those you have lost touch with through the years. Family issues will take center stage, and if this aspect hits a sensitive point in your chart you may find yourself acting out in childish ways, so be aware of your motivations. The housing market may bring us some more important news now.

MERCURY RETROGRADES:

On Sunday January 11th at 11:44 A.M. EST our winged god of mischief begins running backwards. As always, this is a three week period during which you must double check facts, take time with your paper work, and try not to sign any important contacts. If you have no choice but to do so, you must scrutinize the papers repeatedly to avoid any mistakes or misunderstandings. DonÕt buy a new car, computer, cell phone or jet plane. Anything having to do with communication or travel could give you trouble. Use extra caution and pay attention, especially while traveling. Secrets are often revealed during retrograde Mercury, particularly as it begins to turn around.

MERCURY CONJUNCTS JUPITER:

On Sunday January 18th at 2:07 P.M. EST this optimistic and outgoing aspect returns. We experienced this on December 31st in the sign of Capricorn, and now we will see what this conjunct is like in Aquarius. People will be chatty and full of themselves. DonÕt take everything you hear at face value. There is a tendency to exaggerate, so try to keep things in perspective. Sudden journeys will be prevalent. Enjoy the ride.

THE SUN ENTERS AQUARIUS:

On Monday January 19th at 5:41 P.M. EST we enter the fixed air sign. Each season contains a cardinal, fixed and mutable sign. The fixed one is always the most intense of that season. Late July through late August as the Sun passes through Leo is the most summer-like of all the months. This is often the most severe part of winter as we hunker down for the long haul until spring. People will be a bit erratic and you can expect some sudden reactions from them. Unexpected events are common, and because this sign is ruled by Uranus, accidents are quite possible. But this is also the sign of great enlightenment and experimentation. Use the energy wisely and you can experience some very unusual and interesting input.

MERCURY ENTERS CAPRICORN:

On Wednesday January 21st at 12:36 A.M. EST Mercury retrogrades back into this stoic sign. Communications and thoughts will become more reserved and there will be delays and frustrations in many things. This is a time to review and double check things for mistakes. Once Mercury turns around again and reenters Aquarius our minds will begin to travel more quickly. Use the next few weeks to reevaluate the direction you have chosen and make sure you are on firm footing.

VENUS CONJUNCTS URANUS:

On Thursday January 22nd at 8:02 P.M. EST this erratic aspect will complete. Sudden infatuations and relationships are possible. This will produce an exciting atmosphere, but there may not be much reality behind it. If a relationship begins now, you should allow it some time before committing too much of your feelings. This can be a very exciting, but not terribly stable energy and you could find yourself in a shaky connection.

THE SUN CONJUNCTS JUPITER:

On Saturday January 24th at 12:45 A.M. EST this wonderfully optimistic aspect completes. Today most of us will be outgoing and looking for some fun. This is an expansive and enthusiastic energy, and you should make the most of it. But as with most Jupiter transits, it is easy to overdo things or make more promises than you can complete. Take a moment to plan your actions and divvy up your time. If you stay within a plan you can accomplish a great deal today. Venus opposes Saturn at 3:16 A.M. EST, so there will be some limitations put on things. DonÕt let delays, frustrations or a passing mood ruin what could be a very enjoyable day.

DARK OF THE MOON:

The next New Moon falls on Monday January 26th at 2:55 A.M. EST at 6 degrees Aquarius 30 minutes. The day or two leading up to it will be a particularly low energy period. If you tend to be emotional this may be a very trying time each month. I have found that people with prominent moons or a Cancer Sun, Moon or ascendant respond to the cycles of the moon more intensely than others. Spend this time finishing up anything that is incomplete, donÕt try to initiate new projects on a waning moon, it just wonÕt work out. Once the New Moon hits you begin new projects or attempt a new approach to an existing problem. If you have been living in a situation or involved in a relationship that is intolerable or has outlived its usefulness this would be the proper time to move on with your life. If you have been working on a project that is almost complete but you seem to lack the energy for the finality, you must push during these low energy days to end the matter once and for all. If you donÕt, when the New Moon arrives it will bring this ÒdeadÓ energy along with it and conflict with the newer force being presented. Each month we are offered a chance to clean house, so to speak.

Note: All aspects are most powerful and effective as they apply. Once the transit has completed, its force is lessened. The further it separates the weaker it becomes.

Happy New Year to you all and many thanks for your support throughout the year!

Below is a list of times this month when the Moon is Void of Course and neither important decisions nor purchases should be made during these periods. The Void of Course Moon is a time when we should try to center ourselves and deal with spiritual matters not materialistic ones. Any decisions made on the VC Moon will not turn out the way we had expected.

The Moon is Void of Course from the time it makes its last major aspect in a sign until it enters the next sign. For example, if the Moon squares Mars at 27 degrees Aries and then has no more aspects until it enters Taurus it will be Void of Course for three degrees or about 6 hours. The aspects used are the conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition.

All times are Eastern Daylight:

December 29th 4:20 A.M. – 7:42 A.M.

December 31st 1:34 P.M. – 7:27 P.M.
