LIVING BY STARLIGHT

AN ASTROLOGICAL NEWSLETTER

OCTOBER 2006

AUTHOR’S NOTES:

Now that the Saturn – Neptune opposition has completed for the first of three passes we are already seeing some of the results of this aspect politically, economically and socially. Tony Blair has announced he is leaving office voluntarily. Others will do so as well, although some will not go willingly. The prime minister of Thailand was just ousted in a coup. These are the kinds of political reversals one would expect under this aspect. The housing market, ruled by Saturn, is dissolving under the dissipation powers of Neptune. There has been a great deal of over-building throughout New York City and America at large. This is the sort of aspect one would expect to see during a market crash, no matter what the market. There are potentially several reactions the collective can have to this opposition. One is fear; and if it prevails, there could be panic selling in the housing markets, the stock markets and the currencies. Those who keep their heads could make a fortune on the misfortune of others. It’s a sorry comment, but that is the nature of a capitalistic system without scruples.

Bush is self-destructing right before our eyes. People will only tolerate a certain amount of humiliation before the worm turns. This man’s policies have put our nation in the most precarious situation of my lifetime. The fear, greed and selfishness that underlie all of this administration’s actions have led us to this point. This next mid-term election may be the most important of our generation. The attempt to undercut the Geneva Convention shows the panic these men feel. This administration has no inability to secure us through intelligence agencies, good will, or working partnerships with other countries, so they turn to the most primitive of techniques; torture. This coming election will begin Bush’s final downfall. This Saturn – Neptune opposition hits Bush’s Venus, ruler of the 4th house, three times. This may represent a health issue, particularly involving the kidneys and the assimilation of sugars (or alcoholism?); but inevitably when the 4th house is badly afflicted and the person is unable or unwilling to make the necessary changes, they lose support from their family and closest supporters, and they are often forced to change residences.

We are approaching a Jupiter – Saturn square, which will first complete on October 25th. Although that is after the next New Moon on October 22nd and technically belongs in next month’s newsletter, I wish to begin discussing it now, as its affects may be pronounced. Jupiter rules expansion while Saturn rules restrictions and contractions. If this aspect is used properly it can denote the beginning of a new successful project, or the redirection of an ongoing one, helping to guarantee its success. But often this isn’t the case. We need to do things slowly and methodically under this square, not in a knee-jerk fashion. If we try to expand too quickly the projects will fail down the line. If we don’t try to expand at all this will be a wasted opportunity to set down a strong foundation. Historically this is a very negative time for the economy. It restrains growth in every sector, and is prime for a stock crash. Between the anemic housing market, the collapsing automobile industry, the war, tax breaks for the rich, etc. there is little doubt that we are standing at a precipice. It would be nice if common sense was to prevail, but Saturn opposite Neptune will create anything but. And with Jupiter thrown in this month to create a t-square, there could be a blowout of some sort. Remember, more stock market crashes have happened in October than any other month.

In the 70’s when Saturn was in opposition to Neptune we were faced with an oil embargo. I wouldn’t be surprised if Iran, Venezuela and several other OPEC nations decided on the same course of action. This would mirror the last time this aspect occurred in 1971-2.

Jupiter will enter Sagittarius, the sign it rules, in late November. This is usually a time of optimism and expansion. Hopefully that will be the case here as well, but this could also represent a period of false expectations and overexpansion. If the recession hits this year, as I believe it will, this transit may simply blow everything out of proportion and escalate economic and world events. Jupiter was in Sagittarius in 1971-2 while Saturn was opposite Neptune. This created an oil embargo and a hugely inflationary-recessionary period. We will have to wait and see how these complicated aspects work themselves out. The Saturn-Neptune opposition has produced a rather quiet hurricane season so far, as I expected, but it may bring droughts, as has already happened in the corn fields. If they worsen we will see the price of commodities rise to inflationary levels.

NEW MOON:

The New Moon falls on Friday September 22nd at 7:45 A.M. EST at 29 degrees Virgo 20 minutes and it’s a solar eclipse. This is the second New Moon in Virgo, and it falls at the very last degree of the sign. This month will be a continuation of energies that began last month, as we try to complete things. This eclipse is disturbing, because it heralds a t-square between Saturn, Neptune and Jupiter. This New Moon is also close enough to Pluto to create an active and aggressive force. The Full Moon in Aries on October 6th may bring an explosive situation. Pluto rules the economic markets, and I expect some very bad news soon. All the dominoes are set up and ready to fall. We could see a stock market crash anytime this month. The markets love to create havoc in October. The recession is coming, whether immediately or in several months, and we are about to see signs of it, possibly even an oil embargo similar to the 70’s. Events that happen now will take until the next eclipse in March 2007 to be resolved.

There are a great many sextiles and trines this month. These are considered easy aspects, so despite the underlying tension that the longer term aspects are creating, our day-to-day interactions may be more pleasant and easy-going than usual. Try to take advantage of the positive transits and enjoy yourself.

THE SUN ENTERS LIBRA:

On Saturday September 23rd at 12:04 A.M. EST we enter this cardinal air sign and autumn officially begins. This sign wants balance and calm. Maybe peace will break out around the world, who knows? We will all be more relationship oriented this month, and those without a partner may begin to feel uncomfortable. Use this energy to improve upon any relationships.

JUPITER SQUARES NEPTUNE:

On Sunday September 24th at 4:33 P.M. EST this difficult aspect completes. Because this is part of the t-square involving Saturn, this is even more complex than usual. It may be difficult at times to distinguish between reality and fantasy. Faith is very much the issue with this transit, and ours will be tested. Don’t believe everything you hear. And don’t overextend yourself or promise too much to the world. You won’t be able to deliver. With Jupiter’s tendency towards an overly optimistic view of things, and Neptune’s deceptive powers, we could be easily misled. This is also true on the world’s stage. The lies and deceit will be rampant. Well, it is an election year, after all.

VENUS SQUARES PLUTO:

On Monday September 25th at 2:07 P.M. EST this powerful aspect occurs. Love will take on a decisively compulsive feel. You could fall for someone who is totally inappropriate or unattainable. Be careful with your money. There is a tendency towards compulsive behavior with possessions as well.

MERCURY SEXTILES SATURN:

Also on Monday September 25th at 4:28 P.M. EST this transit completes. This is a good day for hard work, especially mental tasks that require a great deal of concentration. People will speak their minds and be somewhat stern in their thoughts, but not belligerent. Try to hear what others are telling you. They may have some good advice.

MERCURY SEXTILES PLUTO:

On Wednesday September 27th at 11:25 P.M. EST our thoughts will become deeper and more accessible at the same time. It will be easier to collect your ideas and present them to others. You will not be interested in superficial resolutions to things, and will seek a more complete answer.

VENUS ENTERS LIBRA:

On Saturday September 30th at 6:02 A.M. EST the planet of love enters the sign of its rulership. With the Sun already in this sign many of us will be concerned with our relationships. Any love affair begun with Venus in this sign has a good chance of fulfilling its needs, assuming there isn’t a more difficult aspect hitting you at the same time. This placement favors art and beautification. This would be a good time to redesign or decorating your home.

MERCURY ENTERS SCORPIO:

On Monday October 2nd at 12:38 A.M. EST the planet of thought and communication enters this deep feeling sign. Everyone will be more intense for a while. Because of its retrograde motion later this month, Mercury will be in this sign for almost 10 weeks, as apposed to the usual three it spends in most signs. Things may get very passionate and the world will feel this force through its collective rhetoric. Be careful in your own relationships. If you are speaking with too much intensity, try to let up or it could lead to arguments.

MARS TRINES NEPTUNE:

On Wednesday October 4th 8:23 A.M. EST this positive and inventive aspect completes. This is a good day for the arts. If you are involved in a creative project, this would be a good day to advance it. The fire of Mars will lend its energy towards all Neptunian things, including music, film, and spirituality. This is a good time to discuss philosophy, religion or other esoteric concepts. The egos will not be as difficult to handle as usual, and you could actually have a successfully placid discussion about things you disagree on.

FULL MOON:

This month’s peak occurs on Friday October 6th at 11:13 P.M. EST at 13 degrees Aries 43 minutes. All Full Moons deserve out attention and respect. The Aries Full Moon is potentially a very explosive one. Mars is the god of war, and its corresponding psychological energies certainly are worthy of its name. People will be angry and explosive. Try to avoid any confrontations during this day, and drive defensively. Road rage is common under all Mars aspects, and this one could be a doozy. There could be a very severe world event today.

THE SUN TRINES NEPTUNE:

On Tuesday October 10th at 10:05 A.M. EST these two energies become more easily pliable. This is another positive aspect, especially for creative or spiritual endeavors. People will be more understanding and accepting. It will be easier to reach others, so try to take advantage of this; it only lasts a day. Remember, it is the applying aspect that is strongest. Once it completes its energy begins to fade.

MERCURY TRINES URANUS:

Also on Tuesday October 10th at 7:07 P.M. EST this constructive and imaginative transit occurs. Our minds will be moving quickly and in harmony. New and unusual concepts will be easier to comprehend. Look for novel ways out of your difficulties. This is a good day to discuss things with people. They will understand you and connect to your ideas. Communications will be extensive and rapid. Don’t’ get overwhelmed.

MARS SEXTILES SATURN:

On Thursday October 12th at 6:39 A.M. EST this most positive and useful coupling completes. This is a good day to accomplish hard work, either physical or mental. But you won’t be satisfied with just intellectual tasks. You should find a physical release, such as exercise, cleaning the garage or a date. Although you may choose to work alone, it will be easier than usual to work with others and get their support for a project. Either way you can get a lot done today.

VENUS TRINES NEPTUNE:

On Friday October 13th at 10:36 P.M. EST the most positive of transits between the lower and higher octave of the love energy presents us with the potential to extend our concepts of love and affection to incorporate a more universal ideal. Linus, in the Peanuts comic strip, once turned to Charlie Brown and said: “I love mankind, it’s people I can’t stand.” There is a difference between universal love of your fellow man and inviting them to live in your house. This aspect studies that difference and makes us look for ways to express the universal without destroying our living rooms. How about doing something for charity or the infirmed?

MARS SEXTILES PLUTO:

On Sunday October 15th at 8:18 A.M. EST another in a long series of positive aspects occurs. This month has more than its share of good days. This one will allow us to delve deeply into our egos and conscience. This is a good day to work with others or to discuss deep things. The usual animosity won’t be present. However, the aspect mentioned below is applying as soon as this one ends. Don’t expect miracles, and don’t’ believe everything people are telling you. They may wish to be more caring and generous than they are capable of.

MERCURY SQUARES NEPTUNE:

Also on Sunday October 15th at 7:00 P.M. EST this troublesome aspect comes along to break the positive pattern we’ve seen since the Full Moon; but only for a day or so. The sextiles continue tomorrow. This brings confusion and misdirection. You must double check all plans and especially all written material. This is not a good day to sign important papers or solidify a deal. Wait until this passes or mistakes will be made.

THE SUN SEXTILES SATURN:

On Monday October 16th at 3:29 A.M. EST we again enter a period of sextiles beginning with this excellent coupling. Things should flow along well today. This is a good time to set things in place and begin building a foundation upon which to expand. This is a good day to finish some work that has been weighing upon you.

THE SUN SEXTILES PLUTO:

On Tuesday October 17th at 10:14 P.M. EST we have another opportunity to make use of other people’s resources in a constructive and mutually profitable way. Anything done for the good of all involved should succeed today. It will be easier to get a group consensus, as everyone will want to work for the common good.

VENUS SEXTILES SATURN:

On Wednesday October 18th at 3:54 P.M. EST we all will be a bit more realistic about relationships. Things should progress along successfully, if somewhat slowly, in our one-on-one encounters. A relationship begun now will have staying power and stability.

VENUS SEXTILES PLUTO:

On Thursday October 19th at 10:40 P.M. EST this aspect completes, and we have an opportunity to continue improving and deepening our relationships with others. You can find a strong common ground with your significant other, which will allow for a better understanding of each other’s needs. Money issues will be handled better during these two Venus aspects as well. If you are negotiating a deal, this week would be a good time to complete things.

DARK OF THE MOON:

The next New Moon falls on Friday September 22nd at 7:45 A.M. EST and it is a solar eclipse. The day or so leading up to it will be a particularly low energy period. Spend this time finishing up anything that is incomplete, don’t try to initiate new projects on a waning moon, it just won’t work out. Once the New Moon hits you begin new projects or attempt a new approach to an existing problem. If you have been living in a situation or involved in a relationship that is intolerable or has outlived its usefulness this would be the proper time to move on with your life. If you have been working on a project that is almost complete but you seem to lack the energy for the finality, you must push during these low energy days to end the matter once and for all. If you don’t, when the New Moon arrives it will bring this “dead” energy along with it and conflict with the newer force being presented. Each month we are offered a chance to clean house, so to speak.

Note: All aspects are most powerful and effective as they apply. Once the transit has completed, its force is lessened. The further it separates the weaker it becomes.
Below is a list of times this month when the Moon is Void of Course and neither important decisions nor purchases should be made during these periods. The Void of Course Moon is a time when we should try to center ourselves and deal with spiritual matters not materialistic ones. Any decisions made on the VC Moon will not turn out the way we had expected.

The Moon is Void of Course from the time it makes its last major aspect in a sign until it enters the next sign. For example, if the Moon squares Mars at 27 degrees Aries and then has no more aspects until it enters Taurus it will be Void of Course for three degrees or about 6 hours. The aspects used are the conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition.

All times are Eastern Daylight:

September 24th 10:11 A.M. – 9:45 P.M.
